This summer, I received the opportunity through my school to study abroad for three weeks in London. While preparing for London, I did a good amount of my own research, but there were still a few things I was shocked by when I arrived.
Water?- It’s rare and not free!
When arriving in London, I was shocked to find it was much hotter in the summer than expected. Due to the heat and excessive walking everywhere, you are constantly hot leading to a need for water. Unfortunately, water is not as readily available in the UK like it is in the US. When at a restaurant, they will not bring you complimentary water, you must ask for it. All water will cost money unless you specify tap. Luckily the water in London is rated the best among the world! Once your water arrives, you will realize there is no ice! The people here don’t like it! This was the biggest shock for me especially when coming into a restaurant after walking around town during a hot day.
Travel- The World is Your Oyster
The cheapest way to get around in London is using an oyster card. The oyster card is a payment method used for public transportation in the UK such as the underground, trains and buses. This pay as you go card allows you to upload money through your phone or at the station and travel around London at your leisure. Another benefit of the underground is there is no traffic! Many days, the city streets are crowded making travel by car long. The underground allows you to avoid this congestion and travel London at your leisure!
Museums- Visit as many as Possible!
With all of the lovely castles in London, many overlook the beautiful Museums scattered around the city. London has a category of museums, whether it is war, science, or history, London has it all. The Natural History Museum is large and full of some of the most amazing artifacts. You will definitely regret not attending.
Overall, London was a lovely experience, I am so lucky to have gotten to experience another country’s culture at this age in my life. These tips to think about when attending and should not scare you away!
