Theater Culture in London

By Mia Singh

Theater knowledge- My First experience

My brother has always had a love for musicals and theater culture. At a young age, he would attend acting classes and eventually joined drama clubs. As he got older, my brother would perform in highschool musicals taking on occasional lead roles. I was always so impressed by his talents but never attended a musical again after he graduated. While visiting in London, a friend of mine had invited me to a musical later that night. Knowing nothing about the musical Dear Evan Hansen, I accepted the invitation and decided to go into it blindly.

Attending the show- Things you should know

Attending a show at the theater was far different than going to the movies in America. Everyone was lined up ready to enter the show 30 minutes before it started. London is the Theater capital of the world and although it is okay to dress casual for the shows, being late is very disrespectful. The second thing I noticed while attending was how rude it is considered to use a cellphone during the show. As we all know it is disrespectful to those around you to use your phone during a show but here, even if your phone accidentally goes off, you will be frowned upon. During intermission of the show, we were allowed to leave our seats and re enter the common areas. Here I noticed ice cream and drinks being sold. I found the concept of having ice cream from all snacks being served to be neat.

Dear Evan Hansen- The Review

Dear Evan Hansen is a musical about a senior in highschool who struggles with making friends and feeling seen. His therapist assigns him to write a letter to himself everyday on why it will be a good day. One day his high school crush’s brother finds one of the letters and is angry with Evan. Later that night the brother unfortunately ends his life leaving his family with Evans' letter. When confronted by the parents, Evan lies and explains to them that they were friends in hopes that this will help soothe their parents' pain. In reality Evan has now opened the door to a deep hole of lies. As the movie progresses there is a character that everyone can relate to no matter your age or background. I found this musical, eye opening, beautiful, sad and more.

My overall experience attending the musical was amazing. I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to deep dive into another country’s culture and learn more about Theater culture here.
